Well, production and reservoir testing

Well, production and reservoir testing is a set of testing to measure various well performances (wellhead and bottomhole pressure, temperature and their distribution along the length of the borehole, liquid level, rate and others) and recording their changes over time in flowing or inactive wells, sampling of reservoir fluid (oil, water, gas, gas condensate).

The main methods of measuring and recording are described below:

  • formation pressure measurement;
  • current bottomhole pressure measurement;
  • pressure build-up curve recording;
  • pressure fall-off curve recording;
  • inflow performance relationship curve recording;
  • measurement of multiphase flows and gas/oil ratio calculation;
  • gas-dynamic and gas condensate testing;
  • downhole sampling;
  • wellhead pressure measurement;
  • liquid level gauging and pressure measurement in the annulus;
  • sucker-rod pumping units dynamometering;

The obtained results are used to choose the optimal inflow performance and to monitor equipment operation with subsequent PTA. This analysis in its turn allows estimating productivity of reservoirs and wells (reservoir pressure, productivity or flow coefficients, water cut, gas/oil ratio, hydroconductivity, permeability, piezo conductivity, skin factor and so on), as well as identifying characteristics of skin zone and drainage areas.

This testing is a direct method to estimate filtration characteristics of rocks under occurrence conditions, reservoir saturation behavior (gas, oil, water) and physical properties of reservoir fluids (density, viscosity, volume factor, compressibility, bubble point pressure etc.)
